Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, affirmed that the Muhammadu Buhari Airport, situated in Maiduguri, Borno State, will officially begin working as an international airport on January 1, 2025.

According to the minister, the preparations to enhance the airport had been completed, and appropriate government agencies had been informed of the prospective launch.

He made the revelation during a courtesy visit by the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to the ministry’s headquarters in FCT, Abuja.

The minister, who communicated his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for endorsing the airport’s improvement, stated that the North-East was the only geopolitical zone in the country without a fully functional international airport.

He said: Building an international airport in Maiduguri is strategic for receiving international flights from the Middle East into this country. It has the capacity, size, population, and infrastructure to accommodate an international airport.

Additionally, Zulum said the upgraded airport has the ability to encourage economic development and enhance regional connectivity.

“As the chairman of the Northeast Governors’ Forum, I want to promise you of the political will needed to ensure the implementation of this admirable stride.”

Applauding Keyamo for changing the aviation sector, he added: The services in the sector have upgraded; anyone can confirm that. In terms of safety, the sector has experienced development and growth. I have seen the efforts the Nigerian government is making for a better aviation industry.
