The national electricity grid experienced another collapse on Monday evening, plunging many areas into darkness.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:18 PM, with power generation dropping from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 PM to 3.56 gigawatts by 6 PM, and ultimately falling to zero by 7 PM and 8 PM.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid failure in a statement, noting that a general system collapse took place at 6:48 PM on October 14, 2024.

This disruption has impacted power supply across the EEDC network, affecting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

In their statement, EEDC's Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, mentioned that all interfaces with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are currently out of service, leaving them unable to provide electricity to affected areas.

Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) reported a system failure at 6:58 PM that has disrupted power supply to its franchise areas. They assured customers that efforts are underway to restore power as soon as the grid stabilizes.

This incident marks the fifth collapse of the national grid in 2024. Princewill Okorie, Executive Director of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre, expressed concern over the recurring failures despite recent increases in electricity tariffs.

He criticized the situation faced by unmetered customers, who are still required to pay for periods when electricity is unavailable.
