The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed displeasure over the economic hardship in the country.

Obi revealed this on Monday on his verified X handle.

He relates the current economy and government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the past administration of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Ebere Jonathan, the late Musa Yaradua, and Muhammadu Buhari.

Obi stated in his assessment that Nigeria experienced an average GDP growth rate of approximately 6.72% during its first 16 years of democratic rule from 1999 to 2014 (for 16 years).

“Unfortunately, the positive economic trend Nigeria enjoyed from 1999 to 2014 abruptly ended in 2015 when the GDP growth rate collapsed to 2.79% under the new administration. I have always held the view that the purpose of politics is to serve the public and improve overall living conditions.

“Due to the numerous challenges we face, we, the leaders, should foster inclusive and sustainable growth to end the suffering that has continued to burden our fellow Nigerians.

“Only by following this path can we create a peaceful and secure nation. A Nigeria characterised by improved economic policies and a stronger sense of national pride is entirely achievable," he added.
