A widow from Ekwulobia, Anambra State, Chikodili Okeke, has publicly appealed to the state government for protection from her late husband’s kinsmen, who she claims have harassed her over refusal to engage in sexual relations with some of them. Okeke brought her case before the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare at the ministry’s Awka headquarters on Thursday.

The widow reported that her ordeal began while her husband, Christopher, was critically ill. She recounted how certain family members excluded her from his care, alleging that they bribed a doctor to restrict her access, claiming her presence worsened his condition. Despite police intervention, Christopher died shortly afterward, and her situation deteriorated as family members seized her late husband’s properties, making it difficult for her to support her children.

When confronted, one kinsman allegedly told her that her problems would end if she granted his earlier request for sexual relations. Okeke expressed frustration, saying her refusals only led to further harassment, prompting her to seek help from the state government.

The Commissioner, Ify Obinabo, condemned the alleged actions, labeling them “wicked” and contrary to Igbo values. Obinabo assured Okeke that the government would investigate the claims and hold the responsible parties accountable.
