Nigeria's Adetshina Finishes as Miss Universe 1st Runner-Up
Nigerian beauty pageant titleholder Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, who won Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, has finished as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition held in Mexico City on November 16, 2024.
The grand finale, which opened on Sunday morning at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, presented a nail-biting confrontation between Nigeria and Denmark as the two contenders awaited the announcement of the desired title.
The event, globally regarded as one of the most captivating in recent years, celebrated the intelligence, talent, and beauty of women universally.
“The two finalists! Nigeria and Denmark, two great women, one unforgettable moment.”
Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, appeared as Miss Universe 2024, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, who held the title in 2023.
In spite of falling short of the crown, Adetshina’s amazing performance gained her recognition from both judges and audiences, who were amazed by her poise and charisma throughout the competition.
Adetshina was accused of allegedly committing identity fraud in South Africa earlier this year.
Leading to her exit from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest, where she had progressed to the final stage.
However, the issues sparked widespread debate between Nigerians and South Africans online.
Following a probe by the Department of Home Affairs into Adetshina’s mother’s citizenship, she withdrew from the pageant, citing concerns for her safety and well-being.
Similarly, debate emerged when a video circulated online showing Adetshina celebrating her progress in the pageant with her Nigerian relatives.
On 31 August 2024, Adetshina represented Taraba state at the national level, eventually securing the Miss Universe Nigeria title, which secured her spot on the global stage.
