This explanation was provided by Sunday James, the Controller of the NIS in Rivers State, during the agency's 60th-anniversary celebration in Port Harcourt.

The NIS addressed the issue of delays, acknowledging that discrepancies in data have been a key contributing factor. This comes in response to previous concerns about the Nigerian passport's global ranking, which had placed it among the world's lowest-rated passports.

Recent reports, however, indicate a modest improvement in the ranking of the Nigerian passport. The Henley Passport Index, in its latest third-quarter update, revealed that the Nigerian passport has climbed 10 places to secure the 90th position globally. This represents a positive shift from its previous position of 100th in the same period of 2022.

During his address, Controller Sunday James shed light on the history of the Nigerian passport. He pointed out that inconsistencies in identification data, such as the NIN, have been identified as a central reason for the delays in passport processing and issuance. The Controller made these statements while speaking to Channels TV.

The anniversary event featured a display of passports, residency permits, and other identification documents, symbolizing the evolving nature of the service. Officers from various security organizations attended the event, which included an inspection of NIS employees at the Federal Secretariat building.

The celebration brought together NIS personnel, members of the public, and other stakeholders in a conference room setting. It served as a platform to commemorate the achievements and progress of the NIS over the years.

In a separate context, the NIS had previously cautioned Nigerians against engaging agents to facilitate passport acquisition. Through a Twitter post, the NIS emphasized that individuals can easily apply for and pay for passports online without the need for intermediaries. This reminder reflects the agency's commitment to streamlining the passport application process for greater efficiency and convenience."

Causes of Passport Approval Delays and Solutions

One of the key factors contributing to delays in passport approval is the presence of discrepancies in data provided by applicants.

Inaccurate information or inconsistencies in identification data, such as the National Identification Number (NIN), can result in delays as authorities need to verify and cross-check the provided details.

Applicants should ensure that all information provided is accurate and consistent with official records. Double-checking and verifying details before submission can significantly reduce the chances of delays.

Another cause is the fact that the Nigerian passport's historically low global ranking has led to concerns about its efficiency and reliability. This ranking reflects factors such as visa-free access to other countries and international relations.

Also Inefficiencies in the passport processing system, including paperwork, documentation, and procedural delays, can contribute to the overall delay in approval.
