The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has refuted claims that it obstructed political parties from inspecting election materials and Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used in the recent governorship election.
In a statement issued in Benin City, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), characterized the allegations as unfounded and misleading.
He emphasized that INEC is committed to transparency and integrity in electoral processes, asserting that the inspection of election materials is a legal right for all political parties involved in election petitions.
The controversy arose after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, alleged that INEC had failed to comply with a court order permitting them to inspect the materials. In response, Onuoha clarified that the commission had scheduled an inspection for October 9, 2024, at its headquarters in Benin.
He stated, “We wish to categorically state that these allegations are baseless, misleading, and completely devoid of truth.” Onuoha reiterated that at no point did he or any INEC official deny access to the materials used in the election.
The REC acknowledged the legal implications of obstructing such inspections and reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to facilitating lawful processes for parties seeking redress through the courts.
He invited all political parties and their representatives to participate in the scheduled inspection, underscoring that adherence to legal procedures is essential for maintaining transparency.
Onuoha expressed disappointment over the circulation of what he termed misinformation and urged stakeholders and the public to disregard these claims. He affirmed INEC's commitment to serving the Nigerian people while upholding constitutional values and the rule of law.
