Mr Israel Ayeni, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in the Nov. 16 election in Ondo State, has withdrawn from the race.

Recall that on April 26, Ayeni defeated Prof. Ibrahim Ajagunna, his lone opponent, to win the party's ticket with 100 votes.

Ayeni, in his letter of resignation made available to media on Wednesday in Akure, claimed that his withdrawal was in the interest of the party.

Also, Mr Peter Olagookun, the NNPP State Chairman, who announced the withdrawal of the candidate, stated that Ayeni freely withdrew his nomination to allow way for better candidates of the party.

Olagookun, who spoke to Newsmen claimed that there will be a substitute governorship primary of the party on Wednesday.

He stated that the modification of the party’s nomination will further empower the party for success in the 2019 governorship race in the state.
