Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has etched his name in Ondo State’s political history by winning in all 18 local government areas in the just-concluded governorship election. This feat makes him the first candidate to achieve such a clean sweep in the state since its creation.
The Returning Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, officially declared Aiyedatiwa the winner on Sunday. According to the results, Aiyedatiwa secured 366,781 votes, significantly ahead of his closest rival, Mr. Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes.
“This victory underscores the unwavering support and trust the people of Ondo State have in the APC and the leadership of Governor Aiyedatiwa,” said Prof. Akinwumi during the announcement.
Aiyedatiwa’s triumph echoes a similar record set in 2014 by former Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, who also won across all local governments in his state. This milestone solidifies the APC’s dominance in Ondo State politics.
The election recorded a total of 508,963 votes cast, with 497,077 valid votes and 11,886 rejected ballots. While Agboola Ajayi of the PDP finished second, Adeyemi Nejo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) trailed in third place with 4,138 votes.
Addressing the media at the Government House in Akure, a jubilant Aiyedatiwa described his win as a victory for democracy and unity. “This is not just my victory; it is a triumph for all Ondo State citizens. I am deeply honoured and reaffirm my commitment to the welfare and progress of our great state,” he said.
The governor lauded INEC for conducting a credible election and praised security agencies for ensuring a peaceful process. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Ganduje, and the party’s National Campaign Council for their support.
Aiyedatiwa extended a hand of fellowship to opposition parties, urging them to join hands in building a better Ondo State. “Let us set aside political differences and work together to create a brighter future for our people,” he appealed.
The governor dedicated his victory to God and the memory of his predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
Speaking on the party’s future, Dr. Umar Ganduje expressed optimism about reclaiming Osun and Oyo states from the PDP. “This victory is a testament to the trust Nigerians have in the APC, and we will strategically work to expand our dominance in the South-West region,” he stated.
The event saw the attendance of prominent APC figures, including Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Babagana Zulum (Borno), among others.
