The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned an alleged assassination attempt on the Chairman of the Osun State Transport Management System (OSTMS), Mr. Nurudeen Iyanda ‘Alowonle,’ allegedly carried out by officers of the anti-kidnapping squad under the Osun State Police Command.
According to a statement signed by the party chairman, Hon. Sunday Bisi, the incident occurred on Monday when Mr. Alowonle was shot in the stomach while handcuffed. The attack, allegedly led by SP Moses Lohor, has sparked outrage, with the PDP accusing the officer of excessive use of force and political intimidation.
The party linked the incident to a statement by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Umar Ganduje, who reportedly vowed to "lay siege" on the Southwest to reclaim power in Osun and Oyo states. The PDP described the shooting as an escalation of political violence aimed at suppressing opposition voices.
Hon. Bisi questioned the circumstances surrounding the shooting, asking how a handcuffed suspect could attempt an escape and why lethal force was used against Mr. Alowonle. The PDP called for an immediate investigation into the actions of SP Lohor and his team, describing their conduct as extrajudicial and politically motivated.
The statement also highlighted previous allegations against SP Lohor, accusing him of targeting political opponents and engaging in unlawful detentions. The PDP urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Police Service Commission to act decisively, demanding the prosecution of SP Lohor and his team to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
The party warned against the continued intimidation of its members, vowing to hold accountable any individual or group using violence to suppress political dissent in Osun State.
