In response to the recent unrest following last Saturday's local government council election, President Bola Tinubu has called on political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint.
The appeal comes amid reports of arson and explosions, raising alarms about the region's stability.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser (Information & Strategy), President Tinubu directed the police to take immediate action to restore peace and order in the state. He underscored the critical role of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding public institutions, which are funded by taxpayers and must be protected from vandalism.
The President emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged all political actors to engage in de-escalation efforts, discouraging supporters from violent or destructive behaviors. He stated, “Self-help has no place in a democratic society, particularly after 25 years of uninterrupted democracy,” reiterating that political disputes should be settled through judicial means.
He expressed confidence in the courts' ability to handle electoral outcomes, reinforcing the principles of democracy in the nation. Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other political figures in Rivers State were specifically addressed in the statement, highlighting the administration's commitment to maintaining order and stability.
