The Premier League team announced on Thursday that Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension that would keep him at Old Trafford until 2026.

After a disappointing 2023–24 Premier League season, there was a great deal of speculation over the Dutchman's future. However, he helped the team defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Last month, news broke extensively in the British press that Ten Hag would be staying at the club following an evaluation by the club's new part-owner, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe.

The former manager of Ajax, whose contract was set to end in 2025, acknowledged that more needed to be done to catch up with United's Premier League rivals.

“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” he said.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.”

Manchester United's sports director, Dan Ashworth, stated that Erik has solidified his reputation as one of the most consistently successful managers in European football by winning two trophies in the last two seasons.

Ten Hag, 54, broke United's six-year trophy drought in his first season by winning the League Cup in 2023 and finishing third in the league, giving fans hope that they will challenge for the Premier League title in 2023/24.

However, they lost 14 games and finished with a negative goal differential, falling 31 points behind winners Manchester City.
